Meniscus tear accounts for about 5-10% of all sports injuries and often occurs after a twisting knee injury. It is commonly observed in people involved in competitive sports such as football, basketball, volleyball and skiing. Meniscus rupture usually causes severe pain at the time of injury. Depending on the type of rupture, the knee may swell immediately or the next day. The patient cannot walk easily and feels pain or even blockage in certain movements.
The repair of the broken meniscus is done by knee arthroscopy, through 2 small holes and with the help of a camera the broken piece is removed or stitched. It is very important to keep as much of the healthy meniscus as possible to protect the knee from future arthritis. The patient walks the same day after surgery and usually returns to sports activities in 4-6 weeks
